What Is MMR in LoL? The Hidden Rank System Explained

Your visible LoL rank is a lagging indicator. MMR is the real number that determines everything about your climb. Here's how it actually works.

MMR vs Visible Rank: What's the Difference?

Your visible rank (Gold IV, Platinum II, etc.) is a display calculated from LP. It's updated after each game and visible to everyone. Your MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is a hidden number that determines who you play against and how many LP you gain or lose per game.

Your MMR and your visible rank are often different — sometimes significantly. A player who climbed from Silver to Gold in a hot streak may have Gold MMR but sit at Gold IV. A player who lost multiple promo series may have higher MMR than their visible rank suggests.

How LP Per Win is Determined by MMR

If your MMR is higher than your visible rank suggests (you're "underranked"), you gain a lot of LP per win (25–30+) and lose little per loss (12–15). This is how smurfs and previously-high players climb quickly after placement.

If your MMR matches your rank, gains and losses are balanced (20 LP each way). If your MMR is lower than your rank (you're "overranked" — perhaps from boosting or lucky win streaks), you gain 15 LP per win and lose 20–25 per loss. This is the boosting cliff that many players experience after buying a rank boost without skill improvement.

How to Check Your Approximate MMR

Riot doesn't publish your MMR directly. Third-party tools like whatismymmr.com, op.gg's MMR estimates, and porofessor.gg all use your LP gain/loss ratios and match history to estimate it. These are approximations accurate to within one division tier.

A reliable manual method: if you're gaining 25+ LP per win, your MMR is above your rank. If you're gaining 18 or less, your MMR is at or below your rank. This tells you whether you're climbing efficiently or stuck in a bad-MMR spiral.

How Boosting Affects Your MMR

Solo account boosting raises your visible rank and your MMR simultaneously — because the booster is actually winning with your account, your hidden rating climbs correctly. When you return to playing yourself, you'll face opponents at the boosted MMR level.

Duo boosting raises your MMR slightly slower because your win rate is influenced by your own play (typically 60–70% rather than a solo booster's 80–90%). But the MMR gain is real and sustainable because you participated in every win.

Fixing Bad MMR Without Boosting

If your MMR is below your visible rank, the fastest fix is a win streak. Ignore LP totals — focus purely on win rate. Play only your single best champion. Decline games when you're on tilt. Quit after two consecutive losses. Streaks of 5+ wins correct MMR-to-rank ratios faster than steady 55% win rate grinding.

Coaching can dramatically accelerate this process — a coach who identifies what's costing you wins often unlocks a 3–5 game win streak as an immediate result. This is why coaching is so effective for players in bad-MMR spirals.
